Calcium

Calcium is an important nutrient in our diets because adequate amounts are needed for the development of strong bones and teeth. Milk and milk products are the best source of calcium in the diet. The calcium in milk is in the watery part of the liquids, so using skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, or low fat yogurts and cheese will not lower your calcium intake.

For people who do not take milk, calcium is available in some vegetables and seeds. Some kinds of soya milk have added calcium. It is important for everyone to have a certain amount of calcium in the diet, particularly in childhood and early adulthood, when the bones are growing actively.
